In a world that’s constantly evolving, our communities are no exception. The way we live, work, and connect with one another is ever-changing, and sometimes, innovative solutions are needed to address challenges such as the housing and homelessness crises. San Diego has taken a significant step forward in addressing these crises in our region with the successful launch of the San Diego Shared Housing Collaborative portal, an initiative that can systematically expand our options for ending homelessness.

After months of hard work and dedication, on September 25th we celebrated a momentous occasion—the launch of the shared housing portal. The portal is a user-friendly website that allows San Diegans experiencing homelessness to find and connect with potential housemates looking to live together and share housing costs. By fostering connections within the community, the system has the potential to not only alleviate the burden of housing costs but also to encourage residents to come together, support one another, and create a stronger, more inclusive San Diego. Key features of the portal include:

  • Profile Creation. Those seeking shared housing can create detailed profiles showcasing their preferences and background.
  • Search and Match. Users can search for compatible housemates based on their preferences, including habits, pets, and lifestyle.
  • Resource Hub. In addition to housemate matching, the portal offers valuable information to help users navigate shared living arrangements successfully.

The journey of the San Diego Shared Housing Collaborative is far from over; in fact, it’s just the beginning. The collaborative is committed to ongoing capacity building, bolstering its ability to connect individuals with affordable shared housing solutions effectively. This includes expanding its network of property owners, nurturing relationships with them to encourage more participation in the shared housing initiative. Generating awareness will remain a top priority, spreading the word about this system and its potential to positively impact the community. A dedicated website is in the works, which will serve as a central hub for users, offering resources, support, and an easy-to-navigate interface. Moreover, the collaborative recognizes the importance of continued learning opportunities for all stakeholders, fostering a culture of adaptability and innovation. Publicly shared data on the progress of the initiative will ensure transparency and accountability, reinforcing its commitment to making San Diego’s housing landscape more accessible and equitable. With these proactive steps, the Shared Housing Collaborative is poised to make lasting and widespread change in our region’s homelessness response system.
