Why we are marching

Pride isn’t just a parade. It’s a celebration rooted in protest! The theme of Pride 2023 is ‘Thrive’ and we at Townspeople believe that San Diego thrives best when every San Diegan has a stable, permanent home regardless of gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, income, or health status. We can think of nothing more joyful or just than housing for everyone.

Decades of research show that discrimination negatively impacts housing stability and community success, and the disenfranchisement of entire groups of people continues despite great strides towards equity. For instance, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, members of the LGBTQ+ community are “more likely to become homeless, and once homeless, more likely to endure discrimination and harassment that extends their homelessness.”

We at Townspeople strive daily to actively provide hope and opportunity, especially as the need for housing and supportive services continues to grow from a variety of factors, including the delay in developing affordable housing units to meet the region’s growing population, the passing of anti-Trans and anti-LGBTQ+ laws in states across the country, and more. We believe housing is a human right as well as the foundation for health and wellness.
