Townspeople: 40 Years & Counting

Serving San Diego Since 1984

As we celebrate 40 years of Townspeople’s commitment to housing, advocacy, and community, this year stands out as a testament to what we can accomplish together. From shared housing successes to mighty advocacy acts and creative expressions of love, we are growing stronger, more innovative, and more connected than ever before.

Shared Housing Success: Building Homes and Hope

This year’s Shared Housing Palooza was more than an event; it was a movement. Our ambitious goal of housing 75 people by November 8th was met by housing 69 individuals in 100 days, which is 92% of that goal. Our collaborative partners—from Father Joe’s Villages to the YMCA to North County Lifeline—made this achievement possible.

We’re also excited to share that Townspeople acquired the Meade Avenue property, a home that will serve as a cornerstone of our shared housing initiatives. With plans for a tiny home and eco-friendly features, Meade Avenue reflects our dedication to sustainable, community-driven solutions.

Commitment to Advocacy & Organizing: Elevating Voices, Shaping Change

Advocacy has been at the heart of our mission this year. We served as a host site for the annual #WeAllCount Point-in-Time Count, helping our community better understand and address the needs of those experiencing homelessness. Our involvement in an Amicus Brief to the U.S. Supreme Court and March for Home in the annual San Diego Pride Parade underscored our stance against the criminalization of homelessness.

On Capitol Hill, we championed Housing First policies and advocated for updated funding formulas that reflected our community’s needs. We also co-hosted the Shared Housing Conference, which provided a platform to expand shared housing knowledge nationwide.

Sharing Love Through Art: Creativity in Community

Art has a unique power to foster connection and joy. This year, we partnered with Hello Barkada for the From the HeART exhibit, creating space for stories of resilience and love. A collaboration with Cardboard Superheroes for a custom cardboard house costume worn by Executive Director Melissa Peterman during Pride, and our Pride Window Installation brought color, creativity, and visibility to our mission.

Strengthening Partnerships: Together, We Rise

Strong partnerships are essential for our work. This year, collaborations with the National Conflict Resolution Center strengthened our capacity to effectively support our participants in resolving challenges. Our relationships with the Regional Task Force on Homelessness and the City of Vista have expanded our reach, allowing us to serve more individuals and innovate in shared housing.

As we look back on four decades of service, we are inspired to keep pushing forward — to build homes, fight for justice, and create a community where everyone belongs. Thank you for being part of this journey. Here’s to 40 years and counting!
